Ok, it didn't start until the 14th, so sue me!

Today was the first day I really really used my elliptical. The kids all slept in, I'm more or less OK for sleep, and I kept setting my alarm farther and farther back until it reached the point where I HAD to get out of bed since I couldn't justify hitting Snooze 22 times. So at 6:20, I hopped out of bed, loosened up while checking my email, then hopped on the elliptical.

    19 minutes
    125 cals
    17.5 'average speed'
    Resistance 6

This elliptical must be calculating differently, since I would break 200 cals after 20 minutes on the ones at the college. *shrugs* Oh well! Exact calories aren't important, I'm mostly going by time, load (six) and average speed. I plan to add 2 calories every day to the burn, though. Slowly work my way up, so by the end of the summer I'm burning 200 at a stretch, and 350 by Christmas.

Sounds like an excelent plan. My only advice would be to not limit how much more you do each day to an exact number like that. If tomorrow you hop on and feel great, and are able to do 130 without a problem, why stop at 127.

    July 15th
    108 cals
    14.66 minutes
    442 cals / hour

    July 16th
    128 cals
    16.833 minutes
    456 cals / hour

I figured I'd start checking out my RATE of burn as well.

Also, according to my scale, I lost 10 lbs since Monday. Wtf?

Also, have done 50 pushups today, in groups of 5 whenever I remember and no-one is around to stare at me. I plan to do 50 more at home, for a total of 100.

Do just little groups of 10 throughout the day really make that much of a difference?

Ok, so the pushups went about 50-40-30-20, as I petered out over the weekend. Didn't do elliptical on Friday because Poppy was up ALL NIGHT so I just slept in, and Saturday is... the weekend with three kids. Saturday night, Phee didn't go to bed until 11:45pm.

    Sunday, though!

    Elliptical
    -------------
    145 Calories
    20:30
    Resistance level 5
    424.4 cals/hour

My average speed was about 10% higher, and I lasted for longer, but with the reduced resistance, it works out to less. Maybe a better cardio workout if I can go faster, longer, with less resistance? Also, I am happy to find out that doing it with shoes and socks is a LOT easier on the feet, much less problems shifting my weight.

    EDIT:

    Tacked on another
    70 calories
    10:00
    Resistance 6
    426 cals/hour.

It was only 10 minutes, and I started out sore from the first one, but it shows I can do this TWICE in an hour, for the first 20 mins, 30 min break, 10 min again. *gasp*

    Monday
    ------------
    Nothing!

    Tuesday
    ------------
    165 Cals
    Resistance Level 6
    22min 38seconds

That's a new record for resistance 6. Whew!

Also, 110 pushups in 11 sets of 10 throughout the day (still inclined, considering just going to flat-on-floor knee-pushups, since I still can't do 'proper' pushups).

Dont ever do "girl" pushups. Your allways better off to just adjust your angle. When you do them off your knees, your removing ALOT of tension from your core. Tension that helps make you strong.

When I do them against the wall, I guess there's more tension on my core then?

    ...

Your practicaly an engineer man. Crunch the numbers.

by being on your knees, not only are you reducing your span, but your also shifting the mid-point of said span from a soft and squishy area to one made mostly out of bone. Which do you think will provide more muscular tension Razz

Well, yes, I am an engineer, but there's more variables.

1.) Doing them on a wall, the angle shifts fairly dramatically from probably 60 degrees to norm when at arm extension, and probably 40-45 degrees when at full bend (I go until my nose touches the wall.)

2.) Doing them against the wall, there's a lot less force on the core ANYWAYS, since I am focusing on arms and chest.

3.) I can't go farther back because I'll slip on the floor.

    4) Knee pushups would place more force on my arms, which is my goal at the moment.

Well in the end its upto you. I dont beleive in them myself. by putting to much extra focus on your chest and arms, your not making full use of a very good compound exercise. Its the focus on the core that elevates the pushup above the benchpress.

In vehicular terms, you'd have a 500hp engine, with a transmission only rated to 250hp. Causes problems when you want to use all 500hp.

So, stick with inclined. Either way is good for me, I just thought that on the ground might show better gains, top-wise.

It might. But at the cost of even gains over your whole body. Once on your knees, you stop working half your body during the pushup. Whil its your toes touching the ground, your working your legs and abs as well. the over-all effect is much better imo.

You might find things differant, and the only way to know is to try it. But my personal recomendation is slowly lower the incline. wear shoes if need be.

I am wearing my shoes, I'm at work. In socks I slip on the first one.

Lowering the incline isn't easy at work, since I am doing them against the wall. I can't do proper hands-and-toes pushups yet (I tried this morning, I can't get NEARLY far enough down).

How far can you drop when doing standard pushups? 1/2? 1/4?

A while back when i was trying to complete a one armed pushup, i had a system where put books under my chest. I started off only able to go maybe 1/4 of the way, so i piled the books so my chest would just touch them. I'd do about 5 reps and call it a day. every couple of days, as i grew more used to it, i would remove a book (they were all about 1/2" thick). By the time the ADD made me want to do something else (about 2 weeks) I had worked my way to going 1/2 way. I figure if i had stuck with it for a month or two, i'd be able to do 5 or 6 full pushes per arm by now.

Might be worth using a similar system.

Maybe 1/3 of the way, but when my arm passes a certain bend, I just can't maintain the leverage, and WHUMP, down I go.

Try the technique i described for one of your sets of pushups each day, and continue to do the others on the wall. the wall ones will help with your strength endurance, while the other will help with your raw power.
