The plank is an incredible exercise for your abs. When you think about the primary function of the abs, working them by using holding a static pose makes the most sense. Abs are designed to hold your torso upright. The act as suspension cables. Imagine your spine as a pole, standing upright on the ground. The pole is not buried or connected to the ground in any way. Its a very tipsy structure, probaly not even able to stand up to the wind. Add some support cables, and suddenly its stability increases dramaticly. It's stability is now dependant on how well those cables can hold it in place. Thats how your abs work on your spine. They hold everything in place, allowing you to stand upright. By performing static holds where you are increasing the normal tension, you are making your abs capable of handling more and more. The plank turns your body into a suspension bridge. you can control the span by adjusting where you place your hands. low on the chest for an easy exercise. shoulder level for normal, and beyond shoulder for more extream aplications. By teaching your abs to hold while under this extra strain, your increasing your cores ability to withstand additional strain, thus increasing your ability to push, and pull over prolonged periods.

What IS a plank, though? You didn't describe how to do it.

Haha, fair enough. figured the other forum members (you and your admin alter-ego... we need more members) would know.

The plank is performed in a similar fashion to the pushup. The basic plank's main differance is that in its easiest form, you rest your elbows on the ground instead of your hands. Keep your body rigid, and hold this plank like possistion for as long as possible (my records about 90 seconds). To turn it into a chest/tri workout at the same time, get into pushup posistion at the bottom of a pushup, and try holding (my record is about a minute). From there you can start experimenting with hand placement.
