Just as a rough calculation, here are the assumptions made when CJ and I bought an eliptical back in November.
Total cost of unit, tax included, $1200
Cost of gym membership per person, $50 per month.
Cost of fuel to go to gym $3 per trip
number of trips per month estimated at 12
monthly fuel cost $3 x 12 = 36 per month
total cost per month of gym membership per month = $136
1200/136=8.8 months until machine has paid for itself
In reality, the machine has been used much more than this. i'd say that the 12 trips per month has been closer to an average of 16
3x16=48
1200/(memberships ( 100 )+gas( 48 ) ) = 8.1 months.
So what that means for us, is that next month we hit pay off, and begin to actually save money thanks to our investment.
As an added savings, we also now gain 30 minutes a day free time that would normaly be spent driving to and from the gym.
Long story short: It makes sense to own your equipment
